Course Summary: This course will cover the sense of smell, the history of perfume, fragrance creation and duplication, aroma chemicals and reactions, fragrance applications in personal care and household products, fragrance regulations, natural and sustainable fragrances, aromatherapy and aromascience.

Course Outline:
The history of fragrance, particularly since the introduction of synthetic materials, the creation of fragrances, fragrance duplication, fragrance families, aroma chemicals, reaction between fragrance chemicals with each other and the environment
Natural products, distillation techniques, essential oils, natural and sustainable fragrances
Fragrance in personal care, solubility of individual aroma chemicals, partitioning into emulsion and surfactant systems, stability and viscosity issues, aesthetic translation into diverse media.
Fragrance in household products, interaction of fragrance with substrates, stability in hostile environments, air fresheners and candles, malodor counteractants
Fragrance safety and regulations, the role of RIFM and IFRA
Chemoreception, the stereochemical theory of odor, the vibrational theory of odor, transduction: how an odor molecule in the air is transformed into a signal and emotion in the brain.
Aromatherapy and aroma science-the influence of odors on mental and physical performance
AI and algorithms in fragrance creation, digital marketing techniques
About the Instructor: Steve Herman currently serves as Scientific Advisor to Sino Lion USA. He was an Adjunct Professor in the Fairleigh Dickinson University Cosmetic Science Program from 1993 to 2018, teaching the Cosmetic Formulation Lab and Perfumery. Beginning in 2019 he teaches a distant learning Fragrance Science course for the University of Cincinnati. He has also conducted numerous webinars for the Center for Professional Advancement. Steve was a columnist for GCI Magazine for 17 years and has written a book, Fragrance Applications: A Survival Guide and several book chapters. His Society of Cosmetic Chemist activities include service as Chairman of the NY Chapter in 1992 and 2013, election to Fellow status in 2002, and instructor in the Continuing Education Program.
